On Library Giving Day Support Sensory Connections at Wood Library

Creating a truly accessible library space for everyone goes beyond extended hours and a well-trained staff.  The library can be a welcoming place for people who struggle with anxiety, sensory overload, and overstimulation if the right tools are available to them.

Sensory overload occurs when one or more of the body’s senses are overburdened by too much input. The body reacts to sensory overload as it would to a survival threat. This can trigger feelings of anxiety, panic, confusion, physical discomfort, and a fight-flight-freeze reaction. A variety of factors, including loud noises, bright lights, strong smells, and busy environments, can cause sensory overload. In extreme cases or with repeated uncontrollable exposure to situations that cause sensory overload, individuals may act out or develop sensory trauma.

To support these individuals at the library and at home, we are establishing a new initiative called Sensory Connections at Wood Library.  The goal of this initiative is to purchase a variety of sensory tool kits that can be used by children or adults when they are visiting Wood Library or to borrow for use at home or in the community.

Sensory tool kits provide a valuable outlet during sensory overload and overstimulation. When used properly, they can help people feel empowered and supported as they learn to self-regulate and express their needs via these practical tools.  Examples are:  transformer sensory sack, fidgets, noise canceling headphones, and sensory cushions.  These are now commonly used tools in school settings, and we are interested in making them available at the library

Sensory tools can be used by anyone who is feeling anxious or overstimulated.  No judgement or special diagnosis is required.

On April 3, 2024 – Library Giving Day – we invite you to make a donation to help us purchase these items.  Our fundraising goal is $2,000.  https://form-renderer-app.donorperfect.io/give/wood-library/library-giving-day-2024
